Dyslexia Therapist Certification Training Program

The Dyslexia Therapist Certification Training Program at Wimberley Dyslexia & Learning Center is a
multisensory, structured language training course for those seeking to become Certified Academic Language
Therapists (CALT) as recognized by the Academic Language Therapy Association (ALTA), a professional
credentialing organization for those trained in Multisensory Structured Language Education and Therapy.

What to Expect:

224 hours of direct instruction 

Broken up over the two years, conducted synchronously in a virtual setting. Days include 8 hours of instruction.

 

Program participants will submit 10 recorded demonstration videos.

You'll submit videos teaching Take Flight, and are expected to reflect on teaching practices.

Requires at least 700 hours of supervised teaching time.

Will use the Take Flight curriculum over the course of the two-year training course.

 

Participants receive instruction in the following:

  • Federal, State, and local legislation, guidelines and policies pertaining to dyslexia
  • Reading and Language development including the science of reading
  • Knowledge of structured literacy components including phonology, morphology, semantics, syntax,
    sound-symbol relationships, and syllable patterns
  • Scaffolding techniques to maximize learning for all students
  • Administration of informal assessment tools and analysis of the data collected

Application Process

  • Applications for the 2025 Cohort are due by June 6, 2025
  • An application is considered complete when all components have been received. This includes the onlineĀ forms you will be prompted to review and sign as part of the application process, a resume, twoĀ letters of recommendation, and an official transcript.
  • Brief interviews will be held as applications are received. You will be sent a link to sign up.
  • Acceptance Notification for the 2025 Cohort will be communicated by June 7-9, 2025

Certification and Licensure

Those individuals who complete the Dyslexia Therapist Certification Training Program requirements at Wimberley Dyslexia & Learning Center will be eligible to sit for the Academic Language Therapy Association dyslexia therapist exam.

Meet Your Instructors

 

Katy Vassar, M.Ed, CALT-QI

Katy Vassar is a Certified Academic Language Therapist and Qualified Instructor. She received her Bachelor's from the University of Texas, majoring in Special Education, and her Master's in Special Education specializing in Dyslexia and Educational Diagnostician through Midwestern State University. She received her dyslexia therapist training at the Scottish Rite Dyslexia Center of Austin and became a Qualified Instructor. Katy has worked as an educator and therapist at the elementary and secondary levels for the last 19 years. She currently works privately with students providing dyslexia therapy, trains educators, and offers psychoeducational assessments. Katy is passionate about her work with children and is dedicated to supporting students with dyslexia and other learning differences. 

Casey Harrison, LDT, C-SLDS, CALT

Casey Harrison, founder of The Dyslexia Classroom and Wimberley Dyslexia and Learning Center, is a Certified Academic Language Therapist (ALTA), Licensed Dyslexia Therapist (TX, ALTA), Certified Structured Literacy Dyslexia Specialist (IDA), and a Qualified Teacher with over 27 years of experience. She works with parents, teachers, and PK-12th-grade students at her private practice, providing dyslexia therapy, literacy instruction, consultations, resources, and training. Casey also sits on the National Executive Board of the Academic Language Therapy Association (ALTA) as the VP of Outreach, and is the recipient of the prestigious Aylett R. Cox ALTA Educator Award (2025). In addition to her private practice, she has a podcast, Together in Literacy, which focuses on dyslexia, literacy instruction, and the whole child. She is a national presenter and the author of Teaching Beyond the Diagnosis - Empowering Students with Dyslexia. Casey's unwavering dedication to advocating for all students, especially those with dyslexia, and her efforts in highlighting the connection between academics and the social-emotional well-being of students with learning differences are evident in her work. She resides in Wimberley, Texas, with her husband, their three daughters, and many animals in their little slice of the country.
